The Pied Piper of Santa Cruz

This morning I read in the New York Times that the steel industry is in a slump and wants a bailout package. I mention this to Chris who says "the Fiat industry is in a slump and needs a bailout" and goes on to say that "pretty soon, the toilet industry is going to be in the shitter and will need a bailout." (I'm in the bath & kitchen industry.)

(Chris is not normally funny so I'm documenting his nanosecond of hilarity with a blog post.)

On New Years Day, we drove around in a 1955 Messerschmitt -- finally a vehicle that's actually older than me. I can never tell if it's the car or my beauty that causes so many oohs and awws. Tons of smiles, groups of people pointing, jaws open and slack, giggles, pictures taken -- when cars notice us behind them, they stop to see what it is (or who I am?) This vehicle (or me?) is quite the attention getter. When we drive in the Prius or the Acura, no one waves at us but in this vehicle, people turn into neighbors - it's 1955 all over again (though I have no way of knowing for sure because I was not around then.) In this funny looking car, we become an instant parade with a stream of followers.

Because I ride in the back, sometimes I worry if the back tire is flat and people are wondering how the car moves at all? (Yet I don't hear sounds of metal scraping so we must be safe.)

No matter.

In 2009 I resolve to have as much fun as possible. And the year started off with a bang. And NO, that bang was not the engine noise, Smartie!

The "face" on that car is priceless!!

The closest I can remember is the look on one kid I delivered :-)

I had a guy friend in college that was obsessed with the idea that I should have a convertible. Each day I'd give him a reason why I shouldn't, and he'd tell me why I was wrong.
Maybe one of his most compelling arguments was to my assertion that a convertible would mess up my hair. He said, "But then you'd just tell everyone, 'Sorry about my hair - it's the convertible.'"

Looking at my hair today, maybe I need to think about shopping for a convertible.

I bet it would be hard to find one as cute as the one carrying you and Chris. Of course, maybe it's the two of you that make it look so cute.

Hey, the classical music community is in a slump and needs a bailout. Since, like, 1970.....

I think I'd probably run after that car just to see the face. Each time I look at it I see something more enjoyable.
