If Memory Serves

I recently bought a book which is a follow-up to a book I finished reading last week. The new book is entitled Fierce and it's a memoir. Turns out I already read this book in March of this year. The reason I know that I already read the book is because thankfully I try to list all the books I read on Goodreads.com which I am discovering is a handy tool for the aging populace - I mean if the aging populace can still type with their arthritic hands or use voice recognition software after they find someone to install it for them first.

From now on I'm going to check any books I am considering buying against my list at Goodreads prior to purchase. Though I realize because I buy a lot of books from Amazon, I should check past purchases there also. How come Amazon doesn't warn me ahead of time when I do something stupid? I wonder if when I purchase a duplicate book if they flag it and start poking each other in the ribs and laughing at me? Seriously, that's pretty much what I would do for customer service but I know that Amazon doesn't have time. They'd be on the floor with laughter. I'm sure they employ the use of robot arms pulling books. But a robot should be able to keep even better track of my duplicate purchases. "Hey, doofus, you purchased this book in March 2010, are you sure you want to purchase again?" -- Some little flag for the aging populace would surely come in handy. I'm going to suggest it to them. (So they know I'm old and feeble and they'll put a red check-mark by my name.)

I hope I can remember to keep adding the books I'm reading. I really hope I can continue to use my eyes to see, and my hands to turn pages or press buttons (on the Kindle), and my brain so I can continue to work so I have money with which to purchase duplicate copies of every book I've ever read and then have something to blog about. Because isn't that what life is all about?

Yesterday I found two heads of broccoli in my cupboard and had to toss them. Since my nose quit working a few years ago, I suppose in ideal conditions I might have smelled the broccoli before I saw it. I have no idea how long ago I put broccoli in my cupboard. The heads were nearly brown. I've not quite reached the age or condition where I must use brown broccoli in a soup with some stones I collected in the yard. But gimme a minute.

When I mentioned the book memory thing to my mom she laughed a bit and said, "You caught the disease. She ought to know. She has it. My sister has it. My friend downstairs has it. Kaffy has it. Baglady has it.

I am grateful that I'm aware enough to notice the subtle changes as I age. As long as I am able to laugh at buying duplicate books and chuckle at my saggy neck, I'm okay with aging though I think I'll stop buying broccoli if I can't remember where to stick it.

I think the last thing I stuck in the cupboard instead of where it belonged was ice cream. Way messier than broccoli. While I wouldn't want to rewind 10 or 20 years for other reasons, I wouldn't mind having my un-aged brain again.

I read Fierce too. And I do that duplicate book thing quite a bit, but at least it's almost always a library book since I rarely buy books - all my money goes to visors, dontcha know? ;)

Hee, hee - if you post about it here on the blog, we, your readers can serve as a reminder too. :>) Like, "hey, don't forget to put the broccoli away in the Fridge this time," or something else as snarky. :>)

I buy a fair amount of books from Borders - and if I purchase something from my "wish list" I sure wish they'd send me an alert. Perhaps a question, like "we noticed you purchased BLANK, would you like to keep it on your wish list?" It can't be that hard, can it?

Oh, and: is broccoli petrified or mushy after it's been stored in the cupboard for months? Just curious.

Have a great weekend. ~ C

I bought my boys the same movie two Christmas' in a row. I was really proud of myself both times. It was an obscure movie that they had loved as teenagers. It took a long time to find the movie...both times. Don't you think I would have remembered going through that search? You have good company. Hope we can remember each other.

My memory has been doing the slow fade for years now. Btw, on Amazon, if you click on a book title that you've purchased from them, at the very top of the page in small-ish letters it will tell you when you purchased it. I finally figured that out myself not too long ago :)

If that was a Big Mac in your cupboard it still would be "perfect!"

I think it's really nice that you read so many books!

Hey, how did you know about my memory loss? I don't remember telling ....... oh, wait. Did I write a blog post about that?
Sigh.
You are one stage ahead of me, methinks - I have yet to put broccoli in the cupboard - but I have occasionally started to put things in the microwave that I intended to put in the freezer (my excuse is that they are side-by-side). The day I find the dish that I intended to cook in the microwave actually in the freezer can't be far off, can it?

Oh my gosh! that's so funny. I've done the book thing before. Every chapter I'd think to myself, this book is so familiar...have I read it? I didn't realize for sure that I had until I got to the who dunnit part at the very end. Crimeny! The other day I was asking J to pick up the pinecone on the living room floor and put it outside for the squirrels...I called it a pineapple instead! I've been doing crap like that a LOT! YIKES!

Janell, Just wanted to let you know that I have been reorganizing the Cancer Blogs Links at Being Cancer Network. I created a "Gynecologic" section - moved your blog there along with cervical and ovarian blogs. Take care, Dennis

What a relief!! To know I'm not rapidly losing my memory is HUGE! I did put the ice cream in the refrigerator instead of freezer, once. Scared the hell out of me when I noticed it...but if Helen put hers in the cupboard...well, I guess I'm okay.

Am going to check out Goodreads. Thanks for the link.

Speaking of saggy necks, have you ever read "I Feel Bad About My Neck" by Norah Ephron? It's one of my all time favorite books. If you haven't read it, I'll happily send it to you if you send me your address.

I've accidentially re-read a book: Sickened - The Memoir of a Munchausen by Proxy Childhood. It was a library book thankfully. Maybe the universe wants you to give this particualr book as a gift to someone.

Now, the broccoli...who knows what that's all about except that maybe you were distracted by an awfully cute puppy.

Today's movie meme has to do with memory.
